AN IDEA TAKES SHAPE

The producer and documentary film-maker Michael Kreitmeir has been active in Sri Lanka since 1996. He has lived in Sri Lanka for the poorest of the poor, abandoned children and orphans. Michael Kreitmeir has invested most of his private savings in the realisation of his vision of a place of humanity.

To start with orphans were accommodated temporarily with families and the families were reimbursed for the children's living expenses. In some cases it was possible to "obtain" birth certificates.
A number of small projects gave support to abandoned children, single mothers and destitute families, helping them to help themselves. Small houses were built. A vehicle was bought. And secure jobs were created by obtaining sewing machines.

A charity was set up in Sri Lanka: the Little Smile Association. With the support of a money-raising programme of Bayerischen Rundfunk, "Sternstunden", it was possible to build two houses for orphans, "Bishop Leo Children's Home", in the highlands of Sri Lanka about 7 km from Haputale. The director of the home was the Tamil priest Don Bosco.

March 1999 saw the birth of Little Smile with the purchase of 50,000 square metres of land on a hillside.
